*PRE-ORDER* DEAD PRETTY: Beauty in the Horror Genre

For anyone who has ever found something beautiful in the grotesque, or something grotesque in beauty.

Across decades of cinema, horror has picked at the scabs of beauty: the standards we inherit, the bodies we’re taught to fear, and the brutal lengths people will go to in order to be seen, desired or accepted.

Featuring a foreword by Jen and Sylvia Soska, the writer-directors behind American Mary, Dead Pretty is an illustrated collection of 25 essays that explore beauty, ageing, transformation, identity, vanity, power and the gaze within the horror genre.

But this is not a neat academic autopsy. Published by indie zine creators The Nottingham Horror Collective, Dead Pretty is personal, political and punk-spirited. Its essays move across the horror genre, making space for intimate arguments shaped by bodies, identities and experiences that too often get left out of the conversation. 

Together, they ask who gets to be beautiful, who gets made monstrous, and what happens when those boundaries begin to rot.
